"Cool the globe" campaign

When I was watching Sunrise this morning (an Australian Breakfast Show), they mentioned their online petition to the Australian Govt on keeping rebates for home solar energy kits. Here is the blurb:

Sunrise is actively fighting global warming with its campaign to COOL THE GLOBE. We've shown how solar energy can help - with the sun able to force energy back into the electricity grid. But our Federal Government has already slashed solar electricity rebates and is planning to phase them out completely by the middle of next year. SIGN our on-line petition now to stop it from happening. And don't forget to tell your friends about this petition. Every signature helps.

Jen,

I'm very much encouraged by your persistence and passion for social justice. There's too little of this in the church these days, and I find your values here both challenging and refreshing.

Thanks for investing your time in doing this.

The Sunrise petition is a small element in looking for ways ahead to be prudent guardians of the earth. Of course it has a "ratings" element in it too (attract in and hold viewers loyalty), but that marketing element should in no way negate the value of signing it as a gesture of protest at the Federal Government's venal pursuit of less ecologically sound solutions to energy consumption. It is even more problematic since the mantra chanted in Federal policies encourages maximal materialist acquisitions (consume consume consume). Witness the comparable mystification expressed today: why are Aussies more interested in purchasing plasma TV sets than taking stay-at-home-in-Australia holidays? The Feds are commissioning research into what is something they have helped to foster and nurture: consume consume get in for your fair chop, spend spend; meanwhile no attention to conserve, reduce, recycle; no punitive measures to curtail fossil fuels; plenty of talking up nuclear options (never mind the toxic waste).

Ruth and I have signed the petition: solar is sensible but unfortunately not so affordable. Why? Well if your political future is beholden to lobbyists (and donors) in fossil fuels industries one is scarcely going to do much to foster "free energy sources".

Yes, it is such a shame that money is spent on all the unhelpful and damaging things, and not on the helpful and beneficial things.

I just pray that in my own life, I choose to spend those extra few dollars on the helpful and beneficial things, over the cheaper, nastier things, eg. grey water filters, fairtrade coffee, etc.

Thanks for supporting the cause, and supporting me.
